Where Do Children’s Disability Benefits Come From?
Generally, children under the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. The reason is that a person’s SSD eligibility is based on having worked for at least five of the past 10 years. As a result, children’s disability benefits are administered through Supplemental Security Income or SSI, the needs-based companion to the Social Security Disability program.
