James A. McKown
Attorney
Born and raised in Marion, Indiana, Jim knew when he was growing up that he was going to be a lawyer. He started practicing with his father, a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army in Europe.
He has found practicing disability law very rewarding. “I enjoy when I can help make somebody’s life better,” he said.
Jim has represented more than 2,500 disability clients in front of the Social Security Administration for more than a decade. His disability clients have been awarded more than $20 million in back benefits.
Jim is excited about the fact that – beginning January 1, 2019, with new partners – he will assist veterans with their disability claims in front of the Veterans Administration.
The former public defender and juvenile court referee also has done hundreds of jury trials – both criminal and civil.
The Marion High School graduate received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his law degree from the Valparaiso University School of Law.
When he is not practicing law, Jim is happiest being on or near the water. He has had the opportunity to sail the New England coast, the Strait of San Juan de Fuca off the coast of Washington State, Lake Michigan, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea.
He also is the father of two daughters and grandfather of two grandsons.
